Midland States Bank Invests in Youth Entrepreneurship Venture PDF Print E-mail

Effingham – Midland States Bank has recently announced the initial funding of the Midland Institute for Entrepreneurship.  The purpose and mission of the Midland Entrepreneurship Institute is to foster entrepreneurship, particularly among young people. The Institute recognizes that the vitality of a community is its youth, and most do not recognize that starting a business is a choice for their careers.   Midland States Bank is partnering with the Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation to manage the charitable funds earmarked for the development and operation of the Midland Institute for Entrepreneurship.

The Effingham County Community Foundation is requesting proposals for the 2010 grant cycle, according to Joedy Hightower, President/CEO of the community foundation.  $29,400 will be available this year to assist nonprofit organizations in efforts related to visual arts, youth initiatives, workforce development, child care and early childhood education, and land use and protection. Applications received by the May 31st deadline are evaluated by a committee of community leaders prior to recommendation to the community foundation Board for funding. 

This year's grant areas are similar to those from last year's grant process according to the community foundation's Program Director, Amanda Standerfer.  "Through these grants the community foundation Board is continuing the Communityworks issue areas that they have focused on for the past 5 years," said Standerfer.  Grants addressing issues in workforce development, child care and early childhood education, and land use and protection will be considered.

RMT SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE PDF Print E-mail

Application for the RMT Charitable Trust Scholarship through the Effingham County Community Foundation are now available.  This new scholarship award is open to anyone that is a graduate from an Effingham County high school.  This includes:  St. Anthony, Effingham, Altamont, Beecher City, Teutopolis, and Dieterich High Schools.  Applicants must be planning to enroll or be enrolled as a full-time college student in a 2-year college, 4-year college or university, or vocational/technical school.  Applicants can be recent high school graduates, returning students, or adults that wish to further their education.

The RMT Charitable Trust Scholarship was established by Tim Niebrugge, the son of Ray and Mary Niebrugge of Green Creek.  Ray Niebrugge inherited a tract of land from his father John, and continued to farm the land and reinvesting in the farm by acquiring more acreage through nearly 40 years.  Tim continued to farm the ground after his parents passed away until his own death on September 22, 2006.  Tim never married and had no children and established this trust to help students with financial need continue their education.

FACKLAM SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE PDF Print E-mail

The Effingham County Community Foundation is also accepting applications for the Delbert E. Facklam and Maradyl T. Hughes Facklam Scholarship.  Applicants must be a Teutopolis High School graduating senior who will be continuing his/her education at a college or university.

The scholarship was created by Mr. and Mrs. Facklam in memory of the Teutopolis High School faculty and the classmates of the graduating class of 1939.  Mr. Facklam was born in Stewardson, Illinois and graduated from Teutopolis High School in 1939.  He spent many years in the U.S. Navy and currently resides in California.
